Day 18

On a much more sobering note, the chat to Mau and Pete has brought us down to earth with a bang.  A friend of the family has just recently passed away (rest in peace, Anton).  He was tragically taken from his family and friends as a result of cerebral malaria after a weeks fishing trip to Mozambique.  And here we were thinking that we would not take any preventatives but would cope with the effects of malaria.  Its been a real eye opener.

Malaria is the biggest killer in Africa and the more we can open people's eyes (especially our own!) to this the better.  We've decided that it's Doxycycline for us which will allow us to continue to scuba dive.  We'll just have to cope with the possibility of side effects.  We could take Malarone as an alternative but that might be just too expensive for an extended trip like this - we're continuing to investigate.

Anway, one person and his team making a difference is Kingsley Holgate travelling the outside edge of Africa to take mozzie net and spray to pregnant women and children.  Check out his website here http://www.outsideedge.co.za/ and follow the fabulous work that he's doing.

- Malaria is both preventable and curable.

- A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds.

- More than one million people die of malaria every year, mostly infants, young children and pregnant women and most of them in Africa
